Choosing fiber for the last mile

A practical look at G.657.A1, A2 and B3 for access-network routing.

Start with the installation

Access networks often involve tight routes inside buildings and enclosures. Specify the finished cable construction and its minimum installation bend radius before choosing a fiber. A fiber macrobending test is not a universal cable installation limit.

Compare the source conditions

The supplied BendCom G.657.A1 datasheet specifies no more than 0.25 dB macrobending loss at 1550 nm for ten turns at a 15 mm radius. The Nanfang manual lists tighter bend-test conditions for its A2 and B3 products. Compare wavelength, radius and turn count together rather than comparing a loss number alone.

Confirm coating and compatibility

Standard and reduced coating diameters support different cable designs. Confirm the exact coating tolerance, mode field diameter and splice compatibility before accepting a substitution. The source documents contain some different coating values, so request a written specification for the offered grade.
